When we review the H&C News website performance through Google Analytics it reveals what we need to know to develop our basic business proposition, the provision of business news and information across the hospitality and catering sector.

If anyone reading this is not familiar with Google Analytics, it is simply software that tells a website owner how that website is performing. It reveals how many people are reading the pages you publish and much more.

By understanding what the readers of H&C News are spending most time reading we can then provide more content covering that subject. The equation applied is to multiply the total number of page views by the average time spent on the page. So the Top 15 rank is qualitative – which pages were read the most.

2014 saw three established ‘Venue Neutral’ content themes maintain their popularity and the advent of a new one.

Venue Neutral Content Themes

Coffee – After 15 years of considerable growth, the coffee sector continues to be one of the most successful in the UK economy. Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs, Bars, Schools and of course Coffee Shops as well as almost every foodservice outlet in the UK sell coffee. So we were not surprised to see that our most popular page in 2014 was UK coffee shop trends for market now £6.2 billion – and growing. Our reader’s work across every sector in Hospitality and Catering so coffee is quite simply relevant to almost if not all.

No 1 – To put popular into numerical perspective the above page was viewed 9,970 times by 9,452 readers spending an average of just over 5 minutes reading the page each time. If you put the term Coffee Market UK into Google and search you will begin to see one of the reasons it was just so popular.

Chef – Chefs work across almost every foodservice outlet including Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs and Contract Caterers, so content relevant for chef is always well received. Chefs are always looking for new recipe ideas and keeping an eye on their peers as one of our many Top 15 pages relevant to chef demonstrates 14 new stars in Michelin Guide 2015.

Restaurant – Most if not all hotels have a restaurant, as do universities and hospitals, and with very few wet only pubs these days most hospitality and catering venues are at least in part restaurants. So our restaurant content is always well received by readers and now firmly our most popular section. The most dynamic restaurant sector for readers was casual dining, with three casual dining pages in our Top 15.

FreeFrom – Our newest venue neutral content theme came from the build-up throughout 2014 to the EU Food Information Regulations 1169/2011 legislation implemented in Dec 2014, which of course impacts every foodservice outlet. FreeFrom page content saw readers across our industry look for information to help them prepare for and implement processes to meet with the requirements of the legislation. Many issues for example were addressed in one page back in March that made our Top 15 ‘Gluten free’ or ‘no gluten free’ – the Legal Implications.

We will of course be using the Google Analytics data showing the popularity of content consumed by our reader’s in 2014 as well as breaking news, business information and emerging trends within hospitality and catering, to continue bringing you our reader’s what is most useful and interesting throughout 2015.
