Hospitality giant Whitbread is reducing its workforce seeing circa 6,000 jobs go across the hotel and restaurant chain.
Whitbread operates a number of hospitality brands including the Premier Inns hotel chain suffered a steep decline in trade since the emergence of Covid-19, and fears that demand will at least in the short term remain weak.
Revenues in the first half of Whitbread’s financial year were reduced by 77% when compared to the previous year, primarily due to hospitality outlets being closed throughout lockdown. Whitbread is also looking at headcount at its head office, where as many as a further 150 jobs could be lost.
The news comes as government is set to announce further restrictions on the hospitality industry including curfews forcing pubs and restaurants to close by 10pm.
Yesterday the government’s chief medical and scientific advisors, Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance outlined their interpretations diagnosing the current position of the country in combating Covid-19. This evening we will hear from the Prime Minister and can only hope that his prescription to remedy is pragmatic.
