Three London Boroughs initiate safe hospitality business testing

By James Russell: Three London Boroughs initiate safe hospitality business testing

September 16, 2020

A new safety plan to gauge Covid-19 safety measures in place at London hospitality businesses and inform consumers accordingly is being put in place by the City of London Corporation alongside the London boroughs of Southwark and Camden. The plan aims to build Londoner’s confidence in visiting pubs, restaurants, cafes and wider hospitality.

The initiative is the first process set up by local authorities in the UK, in an effort to help businesses back to their feet after the recent increases in Covid-19 transmission and consumer concern.

Environmental health experts will independently examine circa 30 businesses in each of the three boroughs and each business will either pass of fail, no further information being available to the public, but businesses that fail will get advice on how to remedy and then be reassessed.

The businesses that pass will be awarded with a sticker to display to visitors and all will feature on the respective borough website.

Chair of the City of London’s environmental services committee Keith Bottomley wants to send a message of safe hospitality to Londoners and said: “Increasing customer confidence in safety provisions will help pubs, restaurants and shops in central London to responsibly increase much needed footfall.”

Tripadvisor enables restaurants in London, and across the UK to detail the safety measure taken at their eatery. We looked at the numbers recently and there does seem to be an opportunity to stand out, as most restaurants are not listing themselves, or detailing measures taken. When safety is the first criteria Tripadvisor now develops for visitors restaurant choices, this look like an opportunity to us.
