Not wearing face mask fine to exceed £3,000

By James Russell: Not wearing face mask fine to exceed £3,000

August 23, 2020

As the government is set to substantially increase fines for not wearing face coverings to over £3,000, we consider the message ‘face masks safe hospitality’ from hospitality providers in helping to further build consumer confidence.

The government will on the 28 August increase fines for not wearing face coverings where it is mandated. Fines currently starting at £100 will increase to a maximum of £3,200 for repeat offenders, now mirroring fixed penalty notices for breaches for other restrictions.

It is currently mandatory to wear a face covering on public transport, and in many enclosed public spaces including shops, supermarkets and high street outlets unless you are exempt, including on the grounds of age, health or disability.

For restaurants and other hospitality providers the guidance is still somewhat vague, but the wearing of face coverings has not been made mandatory yet.

Images in mainstream and specialist media coverage of restaurants, and social media does seem to reflect that their use, by staff certainly, is becoming more prevalent. The use of face coverings by people working in restaurants, especially front of house, would seem to be the best possible advert of safe hospitality. Consumer confidence is still far too low for hospitality and as such being seen to be safe does send a message of safe hospitality.

With more Covid-19 spikes in areas like North West England and Leicester, and the local lockdowns they then necessitate, adopting every safety measure known to man does seem not only the best policy for business, but more and more now also a social responsibility.
