GOV.UK Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the UK
Cases of Covid-19 are rising across Europe, and most alarmingly in Spain where 66,905 new cases were registered in the last two weeks. Europe currently has its highest 14-day infection rate and the statistics are worrying politicians across the continent.
As the UK prepares to welcome students back to school, education authorities in Berlin report hundreds of students and teachers are now in quarantine and some schools due to reopen will remain closed. Reports from Berlin are saying all age groups are affected, from primary to secondary schools, as well as trade colleges.

The resurgence of Covid-19 in Spain has government ministers confront the possibility of a second lockdown. The Spanish government is mobilising every resource available to then to avoid this, as it is still reeling from the first. In the past week circa 1,400 people have been admitted to hospitals in Spain double the previous week’s number, and 131 deaths were reported up by more than a hundred when compared to one week a month ago.
There is also a worrying pattern that young people are being affected, a group that has largely been seen as less prone to infection. Madrid is the epicentre of the recent increases in infection.
France has also recorded increases in new Covid-19 and young people once again are impacted. French authorities have made it mandatory for all schoolchildren over the age of 11 to wear face coverings when they return to school next week to slow the spread of the virus.
Italy, Austria and other European countries are also dealing with spikes in Covid-19 and reviewing safety measures accordingly.
The UK in August when compared to a month ago has also seen a rise in reported new case of Covid-19 – 20th July showed 580 and the 20th August 1,182.
As the lockdown has eased some areas of the UK have seen spikes that have necessitated regional lockdowns. Some people have forgotten or choose to underestimate the potency of the virus and let their guards down.
The health and economic wellbeing of hospitality and every other industry sector in the UK depends on vigilance, adopting every safety measure possible to minimise risk is now a moral responsibility.
