Hilton yesterday announced that circa 20% of its corporate workforce worldwide, 2,000 jobs, that were being furloughed are to be made redundant as a direct consequence of the impact on the international hotel group from Covid-19.
Worldwide CEO at Hilton, Christopher Nassetta said: “Never in Hilton’s 101-year history has our industry faced a global crisis that brings travel to a virtual standstill.”
A similar pronouncement was made by Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson as we reported in a video interview March 21, 2020. “Never seen anything like it in 92 years.”
Marriott and Hyatt have also been forced to lay off or furloughed thousands of employees as bookings worldwide have plunged since the emergence of Covid-19.
Hilton added in a statement that it is also extending previously announced furloughs, reducing hours, and corporate pay cuts for up to an additional three months.
Hilton’s corporate staff numbered about 10,000 globally, the total workforce is about 170,000. No announcement was made on jobs not in the corporate departments.
