The chief medical officers of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have reviewed a recommendation by the Joint Biosecurity Centre and agreed to lower the UK’s alert level from four to three.
This means the virus is in “general circulation” but transmission is no longer “high or rising exponentially”. Further easing of lockdown restrictions are now expected.
All in hospitality will be anxiously awaiting further news on the 4th July reopening date for hospitality being confirmed. And if social distancing relaxed from 2m to less.
If no news announcements are made before this afternoon’s Downing Street briefing, we can expect everyone in hospitality to have their eyes and ears glued to it.
As the week has progressed, more and more pressure has been heaped on Government to confirm 4th July as the date hospitality in the UK can reopen. Earlier today we reported that Peter Borg-Neal founder and CEO of Oakman Inns, was calling on fellow publicans to open regardless of approval by Government, it may prove he can do so now with approval.
With only a few weeks until the proposed reopening date is reached, hospitality businesses in England will need every minute to prepare adequately to do so.
The social distancing guidance currently in force of 2m was clearly of little effect amongst many shoppers this week, eager to get back to some semblance of normality, however distant that may seem. The Government may have now accepted the fact that hospitality providers need to also reopen, and will doubtless be every bit as diligent in social distancing as shops.
