Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives, Feel Free to Fly

By James Russell: Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives, Feel Free to Fly

Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives, Feel Free to Fly

The Government has asked you to close your hospitality business as part of the nation’s Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives campaign.

But if you fancy flying from Belfast to London – Feel Free to Fly – is a strap line that seems to have been missing from Downing Street’s daily briefings. So we’ve updated it.

Yesterday pictures emerged of an Aer Lingus flight from Belfast to London. Packed with people who were not staying at home, were not protecting the NHS, and were not saving lives.

A flight yesterday packed to the rafters with people observing zero social distancing

How can this be?

Is the Government’s campaign not applicable to people in Belfast?

Are people in Belfast immune to Covid-19?

Will people travelling from Belfast to London not transmit or contract Covid-19?

How does anybody get approved to travel hundreds of miles in lockdown?

Are there no checks on people travelling?

What makes people risk their own lives to travel in these conditions?

What makes people travel risking other people’s lives in these conditions?

How can Belfast Airport make people work in these conditions of no social distancing?

How can Aer Lingus make people work in these conditions of no social distancing?

Why should some people observe social distancing, close their businesses, put colleagues on furlough, make colleagues redundant, and struggle with their livelihoods, when some can just carry on as normal.

It will be interesting to track – everyone on that flight – all the people they come into contact with – all workers they came into contact with at Belfast Airport – all Aer Lingus workers on the flight they came into contact with – and measure the mortality rate. Then we have even more interesting questions to ask.

Flights continue to arrive and be made from Heathrow so it’s not just Belfast and Aer Lingus that seems to be immune from Government restrictions.

Can a journalist please ask some of these questions in today’s Downing Street briefing, as any answers would be truly illuminating.
