More than 400 Umbrella Training apprentices are continuing their apprenticeship programmes by undertaking virtual learning sessions, organised as part of a move to tackle developmental challenges caused by Covid-19.
Through platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, the company is enabling learners to continue their tailored sessions, with 10 standards being delivered by trainers and specialists across a multitude of areas.
These include menu development sessions for chefs on culinary programmes as well effective communication and business planning for those on management or front-of-house apprenticeships.
The apprentices are also being given access to specially arranged IAG (information, advice and guidance) workshops being provided by the Umbrella team; mentoring sessions with the Umbrella Hospitality Superheroes, including industry leaders such as Harry Murray MBE, Sally Beck and Cyrus Todiwala; as well as external hospitality experts such as Martin-Christian Kent, who is a International TVET consultant, labour market and organisational researcher.
The company has also created virtual ‘Apprentice Hubs’ where learners and trainers can stay connected and make contact on a more informal basis. These are virtual ‘hangouts’ where people can discuss their challenges and everyday activities.
Umbrella is also using these sessions to run culinary competitions where apprentices are able to challenge professional chefs at cooking particular dishes, or challenging each other to cook within specified budgets.
Umbrella apprentices work across the sector in high-profile establishments such as The Ritz, Hotel Cafe Royal, Park Plaza Hotels Europe, and Shepherd Neame.
Jo Simovic, COO, Umbrella Training, said: “This is an incredibly challenging time for so many people.
“We don’t only have a duty of care to our apprentices, but we also need to ensure that they can continue their learning through this period.
“Many of them have been furloughed and have been concerned about what the future holds.
“They have chosen our sector to build their careers in so it is up to us to make sure that they know we are here to support them, not just through professional development but also their mental health and well-being.
“Those who have been furloughed have time to focus on themselves and make sure they are job ready and job savvy when things pick up again.
“We’re pleased to have helped to create a community where people can go to explore and connect.”
Bella Sames, an apprentice at The Pig Brockenhurst, said: “It’s reassuring to have access to Umbrella Academy’s online lessons, as not only does it enable opportunities to delve into other areas of skills, you are able to revise what you have learned before; as well as continue your individual apprenticeship. The guidance given provides a clearer path of understanding as you can ask questions in group team meetings.”
Noor Zaman, at The Dorchester, said: “Umbrella have been absolutely supportive and positive throughout. The online lessons and one-to-one workshops are great and really effective.”
Katie Parsons, who is doing her apprenticeship at Home Grown Hotels Ltd – The Pig Brockenhurst added: “I really appreciate Umbrella embracing the technology and allowing us to carry on with our training during this scary time when so much else is so uncertain. The Teams app works well and allows us to all participate as we were still in the classroom”.
Vanessa Kraemer, an apprentice from The Strand Palace hotel, said: “As someone who is born into hospitality and used to having dozens of people around as well as always something to do, this period is especially hard.
“I have the Umbrella course and I am very grateful that it does continue while being able to work has unfortunately stopped. Having the possibility to get my mind onto something which will further my career and knowledge, in the area of expertise I have chosen, is great. It gives me something to work towards and occupy my mind when my motivation is low. Not only do I receive tasks to complete but I also receive support from the group and the Learning and Development Manager. This gives me a sense of still belonging to something and not only to a nation infected by Covid19.”
Great to see amidst the Covid-19 crisis in hospitality that the lifeblood of our industry is being so well cared for by the team at Umbrella Training. Thank you Team Umbrella Training !
