Burger King has announced today that the ‘Rebel Whopper’ has been launched in their restaurants across the UK. The Rebel Whopper will be available to purchase in restaurant exclusively for those with the Burger King app on the 6th and 7th January, before being available nationwide from the 8th January.
The Rebel Whopper consists of a flame-grilled, 100% plant-based patty topped with freshly sliced tomatoes, fresh lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, ketchup, crunchy pickles, and sliced white onions on a toasted sesame seed bun. The patty is made from sustainably-sourced soy and was developed in partnership with the Vegetarian Butcher.
Katie Evans, Marketing Director of Burger King told us: “This really is a game changer – we wanted our first plant-based Whopper to replicate the indulgence and flame-grilled taste of the real thing as closely as possible, and we’re thrilled with the result. We’re delighted to satisfy the demand for this highly-anticipated product and finally bring the Rebel to the UK.”
The patty has been developed by The Vegetarian Butcher who offer plant-base alternatives to popular meat dishes including beef, pork, chicken and fish.
Toni Vernelli, International Head of Communications and Marketing at Veganuary, said of the Rebel Whopper: “For all of the important issues that Veganuary – and most vegans – are trying to address through their food choices it makes absolutely no difference whether the plant-based patty is cooked separately or on the same grill as the meat.
What does make a big difference to animals and the planet is when non-vegans choose a plant-based menu option, enjoy it and then order it again. And that’s exactly who Burger King’s plant-based Whopper is aimed at, non-vegans who want to reduce their meat consumption for health or environmental reasons, or are considering going vegan.”
