Ban on chlorinated chicken and hormone enhanced beef from the US to continue post Brexit

By James Russell: Ban on chlorinated chicken and hormone enhanced beef from the US to continue post Brexit

January 10, 2020

Theresa Villiers, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has told the BBC in an interview with the Countryfile programme that Chlorinated chicken and hormone enhanced beef from the US will not be entering into the UK post Brexit.

The Secretary of State told Countryfile that the current EU ban on these imports would be continued and be part of UK legislation following Brexit. Stating clearly that the government would “hold the line” in trade negotiations with the US and would “defend our national interests and our values, including our high standards of animal welfare”. She went on and clarified the UK’s position saying, “there are legal barriers to their import and those are going to stay in place.”

This will come as good news to many including all who are part of UK hospitality and catering. Concerns over imports of chlorinated chicken and hormone enhanced beef have resounded and the statement from the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will be welcomed.
