No longer a household name we thought we’d provide some background on Michael Buerk who we feature below. He is a ‘journalist’ and newsreader having presented the BBC News from 1973 to 2002 he is currently host of BBC Radio 4’s The Moral Maze.
His latest broadcast through writing in the Radio Times shows a total lack of morals however as he claimed obese people living in the UK should be allowed to die an early death in order to save the NHS money.
The elderly broadcaster said people should be free to overindulge and, if they die, they should be seen as weak rather than medically ill.
Buerk wrote: “The obese will die a decade earlier than the rest of us. See it as a selfless sacrifice in the fight against demographic imbalance, overpopulation and climate change.” His article continued: “Obesity is not a ‘national emergency’ because it is caused by eating too much.”
The term demographic balance used as it is above sounding very sinister to us.
Healthy eating is now a big part of hospitality and catering with the industry addressing it responsibly in many instances. It is a challenge that the whole UK needs to embrace including education.
There is without any doubt an obesity crisis in the UK, and the solutions like many similar health related issues, physical and mental, are complex. Mr Buerk’s outburst shows a complete lack of any perception or understanding relating to the subject.
Mr Buerk in 2015 appeared on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! So, maybe his latest article in the Radio Times can be written off as just another cry for attention?
Mr Buerk’s latest outburst would also suggest he is suffering from a mental health condition himself; the NHS doubtless will be called to help him at some point soon. Let’s hope his condition doesn’t make him refuse the assistance of an obese professional who doubtless would be only too happy to help him, understanding that he is ill.
