If you are a bartender with a wish to work in what many would consider the perfect job in paradise, Jodie Kidd and Virgin Holidays want to hear from you. The search has commenced for a bartender to take on the job opportunity of a lifetime, manning Jamaica’s iconic floating haven Floyd’s Pelican Bar.
You can read all about this amazing opportunity below, but why not first kick back, watch the video below, and let Jodie Kidd introduce you to Floyd and take you through what’s on offer with the perfect job in paradise.
British bartenders not content with serving pints in beer gardens this summer will relish the opportunity to swap their day job for chilled beers in the sun surrounded by the tranquillity of the stunning Caribbean Sea.
Floyd’s Pelican Bar is regularly crowned one of the best bars in the world. Located approximately one mile from Jamaica in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, the unique floating structure is only accessible by boat, of which there are plenty of locals willing to ferry tourists across.
Floyd Forbes spent plenty of time sinking a few beers in the area whilst fishing and was so impressed with the scenic beauty he wanted to share it with more people and built his bar in 2001. Since then it has become a mecca for locals and tourists alike – keeping Floyd busy, and preventing him from taking a break for nearly 18 years.
The lucky applicant will take their position behind the bar this summer, letting Floyd put his feet up to enjoy time off for the first time in eight years. Serving Pina Coladas and Rum Punches at a bar only accessible by boat will be the order of the day for the selected bartender – a far cry from Britain’s summer drinking joints.
The job description posted by Virgin Holidays’ for the job at Floyd’s Pelican Bar job states the perfect candidate must be:
- Willing to commute by boat or paddle board, even when the weather is a little too beautiful to go to work
- Eager to chat to locals and tourists alike and get to know them over a cool bottle of local beer
- Manage the music playlist to ensure chilled beats are playing at all times
- Throw the occasional fish to the resident pelicans, who gave the bar its name
- Welcome passing boats looking for a refreshment with a smile
Able to multitask – it can be tricky to hand out beer and appreciate the glistening turquoise water at the same time

This is an incredible chance for anyone looking to combine the best job in the world with one of the best overseas destinations – and giving a local legend a well-deserved holiday – so what are you waiting for?”
Joe Thompson, Managing Director of Virgin Holidays, said: “We think the Caribbean is your playground filled with so much fun and beauty to explore, from the white beach sands to the vibrant culture. We have sent millions of British holiday-makers to explore this idyllic part of the world over the last few decades, but never like this. It’s an opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the Jamaican culture – a once in a lifetime experience.”
