Compass plans stockpiling contingency in a no-deal Brexit scenario

By James Russell: Compass plans stockpiling contingency in a no-deal Brexit scenario

November 21, 2018

The world’s biggest catering company Compass has said it could change its menus and use alternative ingredients as it announced contingency plans were in place for a no-deal Brexit scenario.

Compass also has concerns over the impact on thousands of EU nationals in its British workforce. The UK business is only 10% of the group’s worldwide business but chief executive Dominic Blakemore said the potential threat from Brexit was “serious”.

Commenting on Theresa May’s draft Brexit agreement Mr Blakemore described it as “better than no deal”, adding to the tranche of business leaders now voicing backing for our embattled Prime Minister’s plan.

The plans emerged as Compass reported a 2.6% fall in pre-tax profits to £1.5bn for the year to 30 September 208, citing taking a hit from the weaker pound.

As the hospitality and catering industry approaches the Brexit deadline workforce issues will be at the forefront of plans for most businesses, our industry employs circa 3 million people, 10% of employment in the UK workforce.
