Greyhound Cafe launches new subterranean bar, “Bangkok Underground”

By James Russell: Greyhound Cafe launches new subterranean bar, “Bangkok Underground”

October 14, 2018

From 6th November, Greyhound Café, the first London outpost of the cult Thai restaurant, is opening Bangkok Underground, a new subterranean bar and dining space at its Fitzrovia home. Tucked away below the restaurant, Bangkok Underground draws on the neon-lit buzz of the many drinking spots lining the back streets of Thailand’s capital city, creating the perfect spot for everything from post-work drinking to private feasting.

Guests descending the staircase from Greyhound Café will arrive at Bangkok Underground, a space criss-crossed with strings of glowing halogen bulbs and decorated with garlands of orange marigold flowers to bring good fortune. There, they can take their pick from Greyhound Café’s hotpot feasts, designed for groups of 6 to 24. The feast kicks off with a Chang Beer Tower for the table – a 2-foot high, DIY beer tap filled to the brim with bottles of Thailand’s much-loved Chang beer for diners to pour themselves. To start, guests will be served modern takes on Thai classics, including Complicated Noodles, and Salmon in Hot Pursuit, and for the main event, the kitchen will send out a steaming Mor Fai to share: a rarely-seen Thai favourite of hot and sour tom yum soup with prawn ravioli and juicy river prawns. Other larger dishes include turmeric-rubbed Esarn Chicken, Hot Oil Pork Knuckle with spicy tamarind curry paste and jaew sauce, and chilli-spiked Mushroom Waterfall. To round off the feast, there’s fluffy Happy Toast with a choice of caramels, and Red Rubies Tub Tim Krob, with sweet water chestnuts.

Bangkok Underground can also be booked for cocktails and canapes for up to 40 people, with barmen ready to pour serves based on Greyhound Café’s signature spirit, Mekhong, and spicy small plates arriving from the kitchen.
