Mayor of Wandsworth attends local school’s Adopt a School session

By James Russell: Mayor of Wandsworth attends local school’s Adopt a School session

September 27, 2018

The Worshipful the Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Piers McCausland, recently joined Year 4 students at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Battersea. The Mayor joined a taste and sensory session delivered by Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Adopt a School chef and Master of Culinary Arts, Idris Caldora.

Chef Idris engaged the children in an interactive taste and sensory activity where they discovered the joy of tasting food by exploring their five senses and four tastes.

Food provenance and healthy eating is the key message with a focus on the importance of a balanced diet and the risks of too much salt and sugar. Chef Idris has been working with St. Mary’s Primary School for a number of years and will return to deliver two further sessions over the next academic year, including knife skills and breadmaking.

Through Adopt a School, a cross-curricular programme, Idris and chefs from restaurants and hotels all around the country teach over 15,000 children about food and nutrition, practical cookery skills, breadmaking, sustainability and offer an insight into the hospitality industry.

Sara Jayne Stanes OBE, Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and Adopt a School said:

“Food education is key to giving young people the knowledge, practical skills and ability to be responsible for their wellbeing and to adopt a healthier lifestyle through informed choice. This is why programmes like Adopt a School are so important.
