Students from Doncaster College checked into roles at Mercure Doncaster Danum Hotel to gain hands-on experience of what a career in the hospitality industry can offer.
A group of 12 hospitality and catering students aged between 14 and 21 had the chance to shadow a variety of roles, including spending time with the general manager, working in the kitchen, on reception and with the front of house team, which formed part of the hotel’s Cairn Cares week of initiatives to celebrate service.
The annual initiative recognises employees’ hard work and dedication to great service with a week of fun activities and events. This year, the hotel team chose to open its doors to the next generation of the industry to deliver a fully interactive day of learning.
Taking their studies out of the classroom, students got to see everything that goes into the day-to-day running of the hotel, from checking in guests and housekeeping, to preparing lunch and dinner, and serving food and drinks and setting up the stunning ballroom for a black tie event.
Andrea Hippsley, general manager at Mercure Doncaster Danum Hotel said: “For this year’s Cairn Cares we thought it would be a lovely idea to team up with the local college to give students with an interest in the hospitality and catering industry a unique insight into the daily operations of a landmark hotel.
“Students were paired with members of our team who thoroughly enjoyed sharing their knowledge and experiences. We hope that the day was a beneficial way of learning for the group and wish them all the best of luck with the remainder of their studies.”
Lisa Pyott, Curriculum Lead Hospitality, Catering & Floristry at Doncaster College added: “It was a privilege to be welcomed by the Mercure Doncaster Danum team and be part of the hotel’s Cairn Cares week. It was a great day for our students to be part of and we can only build upon the experience and insight that they have gained.”
Mercure Doncaster Danum Hotel is owned by premium hotel operator Cairn Group. It is situated in the heart of Doncaster, comprising 63 bedrooms as well as wedding and conference facilities.
