A Cumbrian hotel group has held a special event for ex-service men and women, who have taken to the waters of Windermere to enjoy a range of activities to improve their health and wellbeing.

The North East Military Vehicle Club has been working with Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa and Help for Heroes, the charity which supports veterans who have suffered injuries or illness as a result of their military service, to organise water sports and showcase their amphibious vehicles.

With support from The Big Lottery Fund, 16 army personnel from Catterick Garrison attended this year’s event to take part in water-skiing, motorboating, canoeing and dragon boating.

A convoy of historic World War II and army vehicles, including a German Kubel jeep, a Russian Gaz waterproof jeep, D-day Duck and Alvis Stalwart military truck, added to the lakeside buzz.

Organiser David Forster, a member of the North East Military Vehicle Club, explains:  “Our visit to Low Wood Bay Marina and Watersports Centre is now becoming a regular annual fixture.

“It’s the fourth time we’ve brought ex-service men and women here and participants have said how beneficial these visits are physically, psychologically and emotionally.  In many cases, it’s also given them the chance to forge lifelong friendships.”

Paul Brown from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, the hotel group which runs Low Wood Bay, adds: “The overall aim of the charity event is to help these services veterans rebuild their lives and give them renewed confidence in their abilities.  So the team here is delighted to be supporting Help for Heroes and the North East Military Vehicle Club.”

The Watersports Centre at Low Wood Bay is open seven days a week from April to October and has an extensive range of watersports for visitors to try. An experienced team is on hand to help get people out and about on the lake having fun.
