This November, Suvlaki, the modern Athenian restaurant on Brick Lane will be teaming up with London’s very own Lily Vanilli, for a Baklava Bake Off. To celebrate the classic Greek dessert, Lily has created three brand new Baklava recipes which will be available on the Suvlaki Shoreditch menu throughout November – the perfect end to any Grecian feast.
Traditionally bite-size pieces of filo pastry stuffed with nuts and honey, Lily has taken on the challenge of turning Baklava on its head. Based just around the corner from the restaurant, Lily has been hard at work in her Shoreditch bakery experimenting and recipe testing to bring her Baklava creations to her Greek neighbours. Her menu will include a spin on the classic British dessert, Sticky Toffee Pudding, an autumnal inspired Fig & Walnut version, and an exotic Turmeric & Sweet Coconut Baklava to complete the line-up.
Growing up in Athens, co-founder of Suvlaki, Irene Maragarati is something of a Baklava connoisseur, ‘Baklava was always a treat in my house when I was growing up, so I’m really excited for this collaboration to see how something so classic can be given an East London twist. I adore everything Lily makes, so she was the perfect person to pair up with for the Baklava Bake off, I can’t wait for everyone to try her recipes, they are a knock out!’
Pioneers of Greek cuisine, Suvlaki’s menu is inspired by the metropolis of Athens, and houses a Neo Classical design with a cosmopolitan feel. Following the success of their Soho debut, Irene and co-founder Yannis Theodorakakos opened their second site in Shoreditch this summer, where the restaurant has slotted right in amongst the hub of cultures on Brick Lane. Known for their signature souvlaki dishes, the menu also features favourites including Courgette Fritters with smoked Applewood, Olive & Citrus smoked Eel and Roasted Aubergine with pomegranate, feta and hazelnut.
