Wyndham and Newrest adopt global cage-free policies

By James Russell: Wyndham and Newrest adopt global cage-free policies

October 25, 2017

The global cage-free movement is continuing to pick up momentum with the two latest commitments from major international corporations. Wyndham Worldwide Corporation yesterday announced a monumental global cage-free policy for all of its hotels’ and resorts’ supply chains. Also recently, Newrest, a leading global industrial catering company, committed to going 100% cage-free globally for its shell and liquid eggs by 2025.

These monumental global policies were produced after close conversations and collaboration with members of Open Wing Alliance, a global coalition of farm animal protection organisations launched by The Humane League in 2016.

Wyndham’s commitment will transition all of the company’s 8,100 hotels to source 100% cage-free eggs by 2025. As the largest hotel chain in the world, Wyndham’s commitment will impact its locations in 66 different countries on six continents. The company has several hotel brands, including Super 8, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, TRYP by Wyndham, Ramada Worldwide, Ramada Encore, Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham, Wingate by Wyndham, Travelodge, Knights Inn, Baymont Inn & Suites, Wyndham Garden, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham Grand, Dazzler Hotels, Esplendor Boutique Hotels, The Trademark Hotel Collection, and Dolce Hotels and Resorts. Headquartered in Parsippany, NJ, the corporation also has offices around the globe in London, Shanghai, Dubai and other cities.

Newrest is the only major catering company active in all catering and related hospitality segments including inflight catering, rail catering, contract catering, concession retail, buy-on-board, and remote site catering. They are the first inflight caterer to have a policy to ban cages from their supply chain. Newrest serves 1,000,000 meals a day and operates in 50 countries, including France, Austria, Belgium, Spain, the U.K., Philippines, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and many more.

“These companies’ decisions to eliminate cages from their global egg supply chain will improve the lives of countless hens every year,” said Aaron Ross, Vice President of Strategy and Policy at The Humane League. “Consumers worldwide are increasingly concerned with the production conditions of the food industry. The conditions that animals are forced to live in on factory farms is making its way to the top of that list. The Open Wing Alliance applauds these commitments from Wyndham and Newrest, and we are confident that this policy will continue to build on the momentum in the movement to eradicate cages from the planet.”

Recently, a wave of major companies in a variety of industries worldwide has announced plans to convert exclusively to cage-free eggs after working with Open Wing Alliance members and The Humane League. Member organisations have previously secured global cage-free commitments from General Mills, Sodexo, Grupo Bimbo, InterContinental Hotels Group, Compass Group, Aldi Nord, PepsiCo, Mondelez International, Grupo Alsea, and Carnival Cruises.
