Craft Academy opens first London training brewery for apprentices

Craft brewing apprenticeship programme, Craft Academy has opening its first ever London training brewing in Herne Hill, bringing apprentice-led brewing to the capital. To celebrate the opening and the progress of the scheme in London, Craft Academy is hosting a launch event at the Florence Pub in Herne Hill, the new home of the microbrewery.

The microbrewery will be a training ground for Craft Academy apprentices to experiment with ingredients, flavours and beer styles, enabling them to hone their brewing skills while developing new beers to bring to the UK’s flourishing craft beer market, as they work towards a recognised qualification.

The Craft Academy is on the lookout for new talent who want to push the boundaries of craft beer even further, and so the two day launch event will also serve as a recruitment drive for young people interested in a career in brewing. Aspiring brewers can apply to be part of the Academy’s apprenticeship scheme during the event.

Dan Scott and Nancy Nangle, the Craft Academy’s first apprentices who are now over half way towards achieving their qualification through the programme, will be on hand for budding brewers to talk to as well as offering advice and encouragement to those interested in applying to join the scheme. Applicants are invited to join informal chats with Craft Academy mentors too and any successful candidates will be invited for further interviews.

Applicants aren’t expected to bring anything with them as no brewing experience or higher education qualifications are necessary – just a passion and love for beer.

The launch party will host DJ sets in house, from disco to grime and anything in between, with a bespoke BBQ menu (including food and beer pairings), all supporting raw local talent from South London.

There will be a range of Craft Academy beers on offer, including Ice Breaker, which was devised, crafted and brewed by Craft Academy apprentice, Dan Scott, and launched last month in selected pubs and bars. Punters will also be able to sample a one-off beer brewed by both apprentices especially for the event, receive tips of the trade and advice on beer and food pairing.
