Introducing TAKA: a Japanese restaurant and bar opening in September in Mayfair

By James Russell: Introducing TAKA: a Japanese restaurant and bar opening in September in Mayfair

August 2, 2017

Restauranteur, Andrey Datsenko and his sister Anastasia, are set to open TAKA – a new Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar in the heart of Shepherd Market in Mayfair, this September. Taking inspiration from their debut restaurant in Tokyo of the same name, TAKA will offer an authentic Japanese dining experience within a contemporary setting.

Centered on offering high end Japanese food in a chic location at affordable prices, TAKA will offer an ideal place for a working lunch or social dinner. Located in the increasingly thriving Shepherd Market in Mayfair, TAKA will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Ferdi and Kitty Fishers, offering an exciting alternative to what’s already there and placing it at the centre of London’s burgeoning food scene.

Set over two floors the ground floor will be occupied by the restaurant. Here expect to be enticed by an extensive selection of Japanese signature dishes from tataki, tempura and salads to sashimi platters, inside out rolls and yaktori, all expertly made to authentic perfection thanks to TAKA originating from Tokyo where their chefs have been fully trained.

An illuminated sign at the bottom the stairs that reads ‘for the sake of the sake’ is an invitation to the atmospheric and intimate lower ground bar, for up to 16 people standing.  A bespoke illustration of a flowering tree created in Japanese newspaper is a centerpiece amongst the startling grey brick walls. And to drink  … a stunning collection of unique sake, Japanese liquor and whiskey cocktails to try including the Shochu Martini, Courgette and Sake refresher alongside a Plum & Thyme Prosecco Smash.

TAKA is a contemporary, well-considered space based on simple, warm materials, which make for strong design aesthetics.  Solid walnut and bespoke oak on the ceiling softens the dark grey weathered brick interior on the 28-cover ground floor restaurant, with a built-in leather and oak bench, which mixes together with larger sharing tables. Solid brass laser cut decorative panels and mesh walls are also noteworthy.

Andrey comments, “I’m so excited about this new venture, and the stunning listed Shepherd Market in Mayfair is the perfect place for TAKA to call home.  Japanese food and drink have always been particular favorites and I’m looking forward to taking it to the next level”.
