Waka introduces affordable ‘Nikkei Go Food’ to The Square Mile

By James Russell: Waka introduces affordable ‘Nikkei Go Food’ to The Square Mile

July 29, 2017

Waka, a new brand which for the first time brings Nikkei – the vibrant fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine – to the ‘grab-and-go’ market, will open its first location in the City of London this September.

Situated in the Square Mile at 39a Eastcheap – equidistant from the landmark ‘Walkie Talkie’ building and The Monument – Waka will cater to City workers, Londoners and visitors alike, all of whom will be pleasantly surprised at Waka’s incredibly affordable pricing.

Typical dishes, all prepared fresh every day, presented in Waka’s ‘Go Food’ packaging will include:

  • Sea bass ceviche with wasabi leche de tigre
  • Hot chicken teriyaki rice bowl with Peruvian purple potato
  • Salmon tiradito with apple & passionfruit sauce
  • Beef and queso andino tataki, truffle mayo
  • Kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) & beetroot salad with rocoto dressing

The menu will also feature a selection of hand-made sushi dishes, gyoza, tiraditos and hot options, among them Waka’s tamari-glazed fried chicken wings.

While Waka’s ‘Nikkei Go Food’ is predominantly intended to be grab-and-go, a 60-cover basement dining area, decorated in the bright colours of Waka’s happy, playful palette will provide a welcome respite from the hectic Square Mile for those wishing to eat-in.

Nikkei cuisine started its evolution in Peru in the late 1800s when migration from Japan, where Peru was promoted as an exotic land of promise, began. Settlers from Japan – known as Nikkei – adapted their home cuisine using local ingredients, and a new style of fusion food was born. Previously only found in high-end restaurants, Waka now makes high-quality, affordable Nikkei food available to everyone.
