July sees the re-opening of the famous Bear and Billet pub after closing for a refresh by owners Market Town Taverns.
The Bear and Billet is a living part of Chester’s history. Built in 1664 to replace a building destroyed during the civil war, the pub is one of the finest examples of the trademark black and white half-timbered buildings famous to Chester. Originally the town house of the Earls of Shrewsbury, the sergeants of the Bridgegate, the building has served as an inn since the 18th century.
MTT’s Managing Director, Louise Middlemass said “Our last investment in the Bear and Billet was in 2014 and, as this is an historic Grade 1 listed building, we have paid particular attention to protecting the integrity of this important Chester venue’.
“As ever, we have gone way past cosmetic appearances” continued Louise. “This refurbishment has given us the chance to take a fresh approach to our food and service offerings so they best suit both Chester’s locals and extensive visitors. As such we’re offering all-day dining, including breakfast, within our popular Fine Ale & Food brand, as well as superb coffee from Melitta. Along with HD televisions showing sports, the Bear and Billet is now the ideal place to relax at any time of the day.”
The two private function spaces at the Bear & Billet provide full catering and drinks packages, for birthdays, weddings, office parties, engagements and all celebrations. The Ravern Folk Club also recommences every Sunday evening from 8pm
