Hotel’s Seafood Festival attracts host of visitors

By James Russell: Hotel’s Seafood Festival attracts host of visitors

July 4, 2017

The popularity of a North West hotel group’s summer Seafood Festival has continued, with nearly 1,000 visitors attending over the weekend.

The festival at the art-deco Midland Hotel on Morecambe’s waterfront featured a sell-out sunset BBQ event on Saturday, with a marquee of food and drink stalls, as well as live music.

The fine weather on Sunday proved a real draw, with festival goers coming from far and wide to experience a seafood and farmers market at the hotel.  Demonstrations on smoking fish and meats were provided by Smokey Jo’s, and Frank Benson showed visitors the art of peeling Morecambe Bay shrimps.

Hundreds of visitors throughout the day enjoyed the live entertainment whilst mingling between the festival’s seafood stalls which included a Laurent Perrier champagne and oyster bar, artisan gin and craft beer bars.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues general manager Mark Needham said: “Our aim was to build on the inaugural event last year and make it bigger and better.  Judging by this year’s attendance on both Saturday and Sunday, we think it’s going to be a permanent fixture in the Midland Hotel’s diary.

“We pretty much sold out of seafood, as visitors consumed over 700 oysters, 10 kilos of atlantic prawns, 300 crab claws, 100 dressed crab and 500 Isle of Man queenies.  We reckon nearly 1,000 people came along to enjoy the festival and sample the seafood and a few convivial drinks on the Sunday.  We’re thrilled it went so well.”
