‘Project Legacy’ Veteran Hospital in New Orleans, USA

By James Russell: ‘Project Legacy’ Veteran Hospital in New Orleans, USA

June 27, 2017

Does it matter where your inspiration for design comes from, if not hoteliers and restaurateurs may find some from the project we feature below, clean open space that we find uplifting.

Astonishing photographs of the new ‘Project Legacy’ Veteran Hospital in New Orleans, USA, for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The project was designed by Studio Nova, a joint venture comprising of NBBJ, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple and Rozas Ward Architects.

To replace the VA Medical Centre, lost to Hurricane Katrina, the Southeast Louisiana Veteran Healthcare System (SLVHCS) – or ‘Project Legacy’ – is a new hospital that sets class leading standards for patient-centred care. The facility honours veterans’ service and reflects the culture of New Orleans.

SLVHCS has a five-day capability to operate independently, applying the lessons learned from the Hurricane, to create a resilient hospital infrastructure. The facility can remain fully operational without outside support during a disaster, with enough provisions and accommodations for up to 1,000 staff and patients.

Colour, material and spatial cues were designed specifically with Louisiana veterans’ needs in mind. Some colours were chosen to celebrate military service; others, including some sandy or olive-drab hues, were avoided to prevent associations with combat.

Armourcoat’s local partner Southwest Progressive Enterprises expertly installed over 1,400m2 of Smooth and Pitted polished plaster finishes – which included the impressive two VA seals measuring 64m2 and American flag at 16m high.
