Philip Smith, The Lord Smith of Hindhead, CBE has been appointed Chairman of Best Bar None (BBN) as the scheme moves to its next stage of growth and development.
Lord Smith, who was a leading contributor to the Licensing Act 2003 Select Committee review, has worked closely with the industry in his roles as Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and Executive Member of the All Party Parliamentary Non-Profit Making Clubs’ Group. Lord Smith brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience regarding the challenges licensing premises face and, having been a supporter of the BBN programme, looks to further endorse the positive contribution the schemes make within their communities through working in partnership with local authorities and government agencies.
Outgoing Chairman, Robert Humphreys MBE, who will revert to his previous role as Vice Chairman said, “I am delighted that Philip is taking over the lead at Best Bar None as we experience growing interest in its benefits across the country. The scheme brings increased professionalism and safety into the heart of communities, with pubs and bars working with their police and local authority partners in creating safer environments in which customers can enjoy an evening out.”
Now with active programmes across 70 towns and cities clear evidence is emerging that where a Best Bar None scheme is in existence it pays a positive contribution to a reduction in alcohol related disorder and a boost to the local evening and night time economy.
