Stunning Ancient and Modern Interior for New London Livery Hall

By James Russell: Stunning Ancient and Modern Interior for New London Livery Hall

May 8, 2017

Armourcoat polished plaster has been specified for the Leathersellers’ Hall in the City of London by Eric Parry Architects.

The new Leathersellers’ Hall was completed in 2016 and is the seventh Hall for the Leathersellers’ Company, one of the ancient Livery Companies in the City founded by royal charter in 1444. The new Hall is a total new build, apart from its early 20th century façade and a number of features preserved from the earlier Halls. These have been incorporated in the new Hall, providing a contemporary feel but with some reminders of the Company’s long and illustrious history and heritage.

A central feature of the new Leathersellers’ Hall is the complex spiral ovoid staircase and finelycrafted scagliola pilasters in the central Stair Hall. Originally from the old Hall, the architect has imaginatively scattered the pilasters, seemingly at random, around the ceiling and walls of the stairwell. The pilasters are placed between raised panels of Armuralia polished plaster, set as a collapsing weave – a reference to the history of the Company’s seven Halls.

The underside of the stair itself is also finished in Armuralia polished plaster which complements the original leather collar by the Bill Amberg studio. Christopher Burton, Associate at Eric Parry Architects, commenting on the project said “the Leathersellers Hall presented the opportunity to work with and explore materiality, craft and making, to create a series of finely crafted spaces of exquisite quality”.

Armuralia is an exquisite silky smooth polished plaster finish with subtle tonal variations. An entirely natural product made from aged lime putty and crushed Bianco Carrara marble, Armuralia is trowel applied to create smooth or finely textured finishes which resemble polished stone in their appearance, hardness and touch.
