Ransomware – NHS today, what if it was you tomorrow?

By James Russell: Ransomware – NHS today, what if it was you tomorrow?

May 15, 2017

Whatever media you were reading, watching or listening to over the past few days, there was no escaping the reporting on the effect of the ransomware attacks on the NHS. The effect was an inability to do anything, apart from pretty much cancel everything as quickly as possible as a damage limitation exercise. Read again it’s almost contradictory, but it’s not, and think about being put in that situation.

What if your restaurant, hotel, pub was attacked?

Are you protected?

Would you know what to do?

Seriously, think about it, one afternoon out of nowhere you’re hacked and your team can’t use their computers, what would be the effect on your business?

Cyber security is one of those things on your ‘to do’ list that probably stays there just below the essential today category. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. For many in the NHS their ‘to do’ list undoubtedly worked that way too, and despite budget cuts their security is probably better than yours.

We were hacked some months ago, but it was minor and we did manage to stop the attack shortly after it happened. As our business is predominantly web based we do spend quite a bit on security and have our network managed 24/7.

None the less one of our advertisers is a specialist in cyber security and we knew they were holding a conference at The Tower of London next week, so we thought we’d go. Just to be safe, or safer.

Only problem is hundreds of others had moved cyber security up their ‘to do’ list too, and now it’s fully booked.

We take the view in most instances that nothing is insurmountable and we hold events ourselves, “what if we booked extra space for you?” So we did and we now have twenty seats available for twenty of our readers.

If you want one of them just send an email to our Publisher, Denis Sheehan dsheehan@handcnews.com who will put you in direct touch with Kathryn Bennett, MD of ARC NetSec, the conference hosts.

The conference comprises threat intelligence, industry statistics, security workshops, technology demonstrations, guest speakers, emerging technology and consultants on demand to answer your questions.

The conference is produced in association with twelve market leading companies, all specialists in their field of cyber security, working collaboratively with ARC NetSec.

See you there
