The ALMR has responded to Hackney Borough Council’s consultation on a proposed late night levy warning that the introduction of the measure would harm the area’s nightlife and threaten businesses.
The Council’s consultation closes this Sunday 7 May.
ALMR Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said: “The levy is a blunt and indiscriminate tax on hardworking businesses that already contribute enormously in the way in business rates and taxes.
Any additional cost burden will only undermine their ability to invest and employ and, in a worst-case scenario, lead to the closure of venues unable to swallow the cost.
Hackney’s pubs, bars and nightclubs are an asset to the community, attracting customers and tourists, bringing money into the area and helping to create the unique character of this part of London.
“The ALMR has consistently opposed the introduction of Late Night Levies and has liaised with councils to promote a greater emphasis on partnership schemes and voluntary measures, rather than punitive taxes.
“Local authorities across the UK need to work with their local pubs and bars to solve any problems arising in the area rather than looking to them for a short-term boost to the Council’s finances.”
