South London boozer, Prince of Peckham launches May 2017

By James Russell: South London boozer, Prince of Peckham launches May 2017

April 11, 2017

South London-raised Clement Ogbonnaya is to re-vamp the Clayton Arms off Peckham High Street next month and taking its place is Prince of Peckham, a proper pub operated by South Londoners for South Londoners. With the local community at the forefront, The Prince of Peckham will host regular events and workshops that celebrate the roots and culture of the area alongside an ongoing line-up of food, drink and music to rival any other London boozer. The first details of the opening are announced today with Caribbean street food wizards White Men Can’t Jerk confirmed for a residency in the kitchen along with an official opening party featuring Russ Jay and Murkage Dave on May 18th.

Opening May 18th, Prince of Peckham is a 300 capacity pub set over two floors, located on Clayton Road, Peckham. Putting the people first and doing it for the culture, Prince of Peckham is a home from home for all that enter. Workshops and get togethers for locals will make the space a hub for the community, while a mix of good old fashioned hospitality and cutting-edge music programming will cement it as a destination for South London and beyond.

Speaking about the launch, founder Clement Ogbonnaya says, “I used to go to school just down the road from Prince of Peckham and have been here ever since. To be able to do what I love in the place I grew up in makes this all the more special. Prince of Peckham will be a place where everyone can feel at home, but first and foremost it will be a proper pub for South London, by South London.”

Street Feast regulars White Men Can’t Jerk man the kitchen, with a weekly offering inspired by their love of all things Caribbean. Saturday’s host a bottomless brunch, Sundays offer a jerk-inspired roast, while Hot Mess Mondays will serve up bottomless wings to cure any midweek blues. The rest of the food menu features a fusion of Caribbean and British classics including homemade jerk sausage rolls, curried mutton shepherds pie and jerk sausages and mash with onion gravy. At the bar, rum-based cocktails and beers make up the drinks menu.

Prince of Peckham officially opens with a public launch party on May 18th, guest DJ’s include one half of TONGA, Murkage Dave who currently has a packed summer touring schedule with Mike Skinner. Also on the bill is Good Times veteran DJ Russ Jay, renowned for his various releases and signature sound. The weekly programme of events will all be curated in-house, kicking off with Boiler Room resident Ahadadream who man the decks for an unmissable launch weekend.

Eager to champion local creatives, Prince Of Peckham will provide a space for local artists to showcase work, providing an insight into the myriad of talent in the area. Free community-based events are planned in the coming weeks and will take advantage of the space upstairs.

Prince of Peckham is the first venture from The Arbuthnot Group, launched by Peckham-raised Clement Ogbonnaya. The group is committed to delivering quality hospitality through great value food and drink and excellent programming.
