It’s written on the menu that Ceru was born from a love of food, drink and sunshine. We certainly felt that when we arrived. The walls were painted vibrant yellow and the interior inspired thoughts and memories of the Mediterranean.
We arrived to a large table on entrance that was perfect for groups. There was certainly enough room to avoid the clashing of elbows while sharing the dishes. Perfect for a small private birthday party with good friends.
As soon as we were comfortable, the table was scattered with beautiful bowls full of houmous with green chilli, Pancar (roasted beetroot, yogurt, garlic and crushed pistachio) and a first time dish for me called Fadi, (roasted courgette, yogurt, lemon and tahini) The fadi was my favourite. It was smooth and rich and smoky, with a citrus undertone. Like velveteen on the tongue.
The crisp apple, mint and pomegranate salad was fresh and exhilarating. The crunch of the apples and pomegranate were the perfect combination in the mouth.
The Spiced warm cauliflower and walnut salad was the perfect contrast of nuts and spice. Every starter dish experienced, was as fresh and as moreish as the last.
My favourite side dish was the roasted pumpkin, spiced sesame seed snap, coriander and Tahini sauce. The sesame snaps added delightful little bursts of spice and heat to the creamy sweet texture of the pumpkin.
The Shish Taouk Chicken breast was juicy and tender. The undertones of the paprika and lemon were a sublime combination.
My favourite main course was the Lamb Shoulder. It had been slow roasted for 5 hours in a secret blend of 12 Shawarma spices. It was melt-in-the-mouth. An outstanding celebration of lingering flavours and textures. Luckily, a few of these were brought the table as it was certainly enjoyed by all.
The deserts were not overly-complicated leaving natural flavours such as yogurt, pears, honey and nuts to delight out senses.
I will certainly be returning to Ceru. I truly enjoyed the atmosphere and the food.
Even if the London weather doesn’t improve, there will always be a little bit of sunshine in South Kensington.
I would like to Thank the hosts and owners Barry and Patricia Hilton for the memorable experience. Thank you also to Hugh Wright for the invitation.
