Goode & Wright, Portobello Road re-launches

By James Russell: Goode & Wright, Portobello Road re-launches

March 15, 2017

Goode & Wright, an independent bistro and wine bar on London’s iconic Portobello Road, has undergone some exciting new changes seeing an entirely new management and food team take over, with owners Oren Goldfeld & Gabriel Muñuz Rodriguez at the helm.

The bistro serves up both small and large plates from lunch to dinner and boasts an extensive drinks menu with a carefully curated choice of wines, cocktails and coffees. Come the weekend, the brunch crowd pours in from 10am to late afternoon.

The revamped menu has been crafted by incoming chefs Oren Goldfeld, who hails from Israel, and Spaniard Gabriel Muñoz Rodriguez. Goldfeld has developed his own style of cooking – classic with some modern techniques and a mixture of Middle Eastern, European and Asian flavours – by cooking in global kitchens for the past 17 years. He’s been behind the food at London’s Restaurant 1701, and Tel Aviv eatery Rokach 73. Meanwhile, Rodriguez has been a chef both in Malaga, the Basque country and the UK, having completed stints at Tokimeite restaurants “50 Days” by Albert Adria

Their global influence is stamped all over Goode & Wright’s new menu, which makes a slight departure from traditional French fare to embrace a more global sensibility and small, tapas-style sharing plates. Expect to see inventive dishes like hake ceviche with almond milk and kimchee crumb and, for dessert, marmite and chocolate Guinness cake. As for brunch, dishes like brioche with kaya jam (a coconut and pandan leaf spread popular in Asia) sit next to more traditional brunch favourites like avocado toast and scrambled eggs. On Sundays, diners can tuck into a full roast with all the trimmings – washed down with unlimited drinks – from 3pm.

The name Goode & Wright was inspired by a former school uniform outfitter from 1928 who serviced the adjacent Portobello School. Tipping their hats to the industrious Mr. Goode and Mr. Wright, the new owners have kept the original signage’s colours and typography. This is in keeping with their belief in the importance of protecting the character and independent nature of Portobello Road. The new management team has also retained the wood panelling and relaxed decor of the restaurant, which creates an intimate dining space that’s ideal for cosy get-togethers and romantic dinners. And with a new, international team injecting new energy into the restaurant, this is an exciting addition that cements London’s reputation as being a melting pot of influences and the restaurant capital of the world.
