English wines are poised to play an increasingly important role in 2017. Though wine has been produced in the country since the time of the Romans, it’s only in the last decade or two that the real winemaking potential has been realised. A new generation of winemakers and modern technology, combined with improving climate have provided the necessary elements to produce top still and sparkling wines, that today are even rivalling those of historic Grand Marque Champagne houses.
IWC On-Trade Supplier of the Year, Jascots Wine Merchants has been selling English wines for the last decade and monitoring the growing demand.
“The consumer perception is quickly shifting and the industry seems to be reaching a critical point,” commented Jascots Head of Buying & Marketing, Adam Porter. “The standard of quality is high and sparkling wines in particular have been widely recognised by critics worldwide. Combine this with the recent trend toward ‘local food’ and ‘craft drinks,’ it’s not hard to see why demand is on the rise.”
Today to satisfy consumers’ thirst for English wines, this September Jascots made the move to expand their portfolio to include both sparkling and still wines from six of the nation’s best producers: Harrow & Hope from Buckinghamshire, Nyetimber, and Bolney Estate from West Sussex, Three Choirs from Gloucestershire, Lyme Bay from Devon and Sixteen Ridges from Worcestershire.

“Each year we collect and analyse the wine lists from UK independent restaurants to extract pinpoint key trending varietals, regions and prices brackets. We’ve been monitoring the rise of English wines and especially in lieu of recent currency fluctuations and changes to trade, we expect this trend will continue to gain speed!” said Porter.
Jascots will be sharing its newest UK On-Trade findings on Thursday, the 26th January in Central London at the Royal Society of Arts and will also have all its newest wines, including the English wines mentioned available to taste afterward.
