In today’s consumer led society, the idea of renting something has become a little old fashioned. Most equipment companies are sales driven, with the normal expectation being that commercial kitchens will purchase whatever equipment they need. So is rental always a false economy?

There are various scenarios where purchasing new equipment is not possible, or practical and this is where rental can prove the ideal temporary solution.

Imminent move

Recently one of our clients required a new oven due to the previous model being beyond repair. Despite needing to maintain their catering service, they were loathe to splash out on a new one as they were moving to a new location complete with new kitchen, in three months time. As a solution to this, we arranged a cost effective rental replacement to bridge the gap before the move.

Temporary premises

If building renovations cause you to relocate to a temporary site, it can throw up all kinds of problems. Even if you stay onsite but move to another area within the same building, the logistics can prove the stuff of nightmares.

Can you easily move the equipment you have? Will it all fit into your temporary home? Will you need to change the way you cater for your diners and therefore require different types of appliance? Again, renting the items you need is the answer, until normal service can resume.

Budget restrictions

What happens if you suddenly find yourself in need of equipment, but funds are unavailable? Perhaps this year’s budget has been spent and it’s a few months before the next financial year kicks in. Or maybe there are various hoops to jump through before you get authorisation on spend for big ticket items. Rental can tide you over and help avoid large up-front costs while you’re waiting for the all-important finance.

Try before you buy

And speaking of money, another way that rental can actually help you save, is when it allows you to avoid making costly mistakes. If you’re thinking of purchasing a new item, or upgrading a piece of equipment, but want to be sure you are making the right investment, then why not rent one for a while? This way you get to trial how it fits into your kitchen and your day to day catering operation before committing to purchase.

You may find that you don’t need as many functions as you think and that you can get away with a simpler, cheaper model. On the flip side, you might realise that it doesn’t do the job you need and it’s worth going up to the next price bracket, rather than being continually frustrated by a lack of versatility.
