Queen’s 90th and Euro 2016 – time to celebrate down the pub this weekend, says BBPA

By James Russell: Queen’s 90th and Euro 2016 – time to celebrate down the pub this weekend, says BBPA

June 10, 2016

A unique combination of The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, and the start of the home teams’ campaigns in Euro 2016, promises to be a huge celebration for Britain’s brewers and pubs, says the British Beer & Pub Association.

This weekend, the unique Royal milestone, coupled with the unprecedented three home teams competing in the football, and the extra hours for pubs following a request from the BBPA, should put Britain’s locals at the heart of the celebrations. The longer pub hours apply to Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June, until 1am.

Beer lovers are set to enjoy 17 million extra pints this weekend (both at home and in pubs), as England play Russia, Wales take on Slovakia, and Northern Ireland clash with Poland.

Britain’s brewers are also joining in the celebrations, toasting Her Majesty with some unique ales specially created to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday.  Bedford’s Charles Wells has produced Ma’am, a glorious golden ale, whilst London based Fuller’s have created Ninety, a pale ale.

Midlands based brewer and pub operator, Martson’s, is celebrating with One is 90, 3.6% pale ale. Kent’s Shepherd Neame has brewed HMQ – a celebration ale both on draught and in a spectacular presentation bottle.

Throughout the European Championship, pub food sales and the favourable kick-off times, should provide a further boost – as would the further progress of the home teams in the tournament.

At what promises to be such as busy time for pubs, the BBPA has also produced guidance, freely available on line, to help pubs ensure a safe and successful tournament.

BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds comments:

“With The Queen’s 90th Birthday, and three home teams flying the flag in Euro 2016, we expect the start of a bumper boost for Britain’s pubs with many great reasons to come together and celebrate this summer.”
