Crerar Hotels Trust has donated £4,000 to Deaf Action who help raise awareness of the needs and rights of deaf people. The donation will fund two British sign language courses for at least ten families with children under 8 years old.
The support was celebrated during a special cheque presentation from Brian Angus, General Manager of Scotland’s Hotel & Leisure Club on behalf of Crerar Hotels Trust to the charity earlier this month.
Deaf Action raises awareness of the needs and rights of deaf people, challenging discrimination and providing services to promote independence and quality of life. They are one of over 70 charities to receive funding from Crerar Hotels Trust in the past year alone. The trust, chaired by Paddy Crerar, is tasked with the distribution of more than half of the hotel groups distributable profits to charities, community projects and good causes that have links to where Crerar Hotels are located or have interests. The trust has donated over £4 million in the past 10 years.
For Deaf Action, the support from the Crerar Hotels Trust will ensure that two, ten week British Sign Language (BSL) courses are delivered with the aim to improve communication skills in a stimulating and family friendly way that is inclusive of deaf children. The course will be set up in a way to allow families plenty opportunity to practice and learn. This will enrich the learning experience by allowing adults to see different ways in which signing can be utilised in their everyday family life.
On receipt of the donation, Alison McGachy, Fundraising & Marketing Officer at Deaf Action said ‘this fantastic grant from the Crerar Hotels Trust will allow us to provide free British Sign Language classes for deaf children and their families. These classes will hugely benefit deaf children, improving their communication so they can become more involved within their family, friends and the wider deaf community.
