Ondine is on a Mission to help the Fishermen

By James Russell: Ondine is on a Mission to help the Fishermen

April 21, 2016

Scotland’s top seafood restaurant, Ondine is exclusively opening on Sunday 22 May for a charity lunch with all proceeds being donated towards The Fishermen’s Mission.

The first of its kind hosted by Ondine will see Chef Proprietor, Roy Brett join forces with Gary Welch, Owner of Welch Fishmongers, Calum Richardson, Owner of The Bay Fish & Chips in Stonehaven and Mel Sinclair, an Edinburgh born Private Chef working in Cannes, to create an unforgettable lunch.

The lunch, which is set to become an annual event at the restaurant, will raise money for the brave fishing communities across Scotland who continuously risk their lives to ensure the freshest catch.

Chef Proprietor of Ondine, Roy Brett, said: “We know exactly where our fish comes from at Ondine. But sometimes we can all forget what Fishermen have to go through to get it here.

“The bravery of our fishermen or the sacrifices they make to work in one of the toughest professions in the world should never be taken for granted and we want to help in any way we can. So the reason behind our lunch is simple and the need is real.”

Customers can tuck in to Ondine classics, as well as enjoy the fresh taste of the sustainable fish and chips from The Bay and sample a variety of oysters, shucked by Mel at the horseshoe Oyster Bar. All supplies will come directly from Welch Fishmongers, Ondine’s main supplier since opening in 2009. Dishes will also be matched with wines from Ondine’s Wine Merchant, Phillipe Larue from L’art du Vin.

Gary Welch, owner of Welch Fishmongers, said: “Growing up in Newhaven, I feel that the fishing industry and community as a whole are in my blood. I am delighted to be supporting this event to show our appreciation and give a little something back to our local heroes.”
