Energy is an issue for everyone, regardless of which part of the hospitality and catering industry you work in, it’s also an area where costs can spiral. How the energy industry works and how to understand it like any industry can sometimes be time consuming and challenging, so Hotel Energy in association with Hospitality & Catering News are providing energy industry updates that can help your hospitality and/or catering business save energy and energy costs.
Does your business does qualify for an ESOS assessment and have you complied?
Following OFGEM’s recent large penalties and fines imposed on suppliers such as E.ON Energy, BES and NPower, the energy authorities are now seen to be taking things very seriously indeed. DECC (The Department of Energy and Climate Change) and The Environmental Agency are no exceptions.
It has come to light that out of the estimated 10,000 businesses which qualified for the mandatory ESOS scheme, around 3,000 businesses have done absolutely nothing.
Jo Scully, ESOS Project Manager at the Environmental Agency has stated that they have received around 6,500 ESOS notifications in December 2015. Out of that, 4,000 said they had fully complied and 2,500 confirmed they intended to comply by the 29th January 2016 deadline.
Any business which has over 250 staff (fiscal year 2014-2015) and/or a turnover of over £42M (€50M) should have already complied with the ESOS auditing and reporting scheme.
The Environmental Agency intend to fine businesses which do qualify but have not shown any intention to comply around £50,000, along with a further daily penalty until the business is ESOS compliant. Furthermore, there will be a published ‘Name and Shame’ list.
If your business does qualify for an ESOS assessment and you haven’t complied as yet, not all is lost. Contact us immediately so we can get the ball rolling for you.
