Michelin Star Dining with Steve Smith @ Bohemia

By James Russell: Michelin Star Dining with Steve Smith @ Bohemia

March 21, 2016

Bohemia Bar & Restaurant provides unrivalled Michelin Star dining in the heart of Jersey. Head Chef Steve Smith, who has held a Michelin Star for over 15 years from the age of just 24, has created a truly outstanding dining experience with his ingredient and flavour driven tasting menus.

Bohemia Bar & Restaurant boasts a stellar reputation for its first rate cuisine, placing it firmly on the gastronomic map as a food-lover’s destination. Situated on the ground floor of The Club Hotel & Spa, Bohemia Bar & Restaurant has been Jersey’s finest dining establishment since opening its doors in April 2004.

Michelin Starred Steve Smith has been at Bohemia since January 2013, and has taken the restaurant to new heights. The restaurant’s many accolades are proudly displayed by the entrance to the restaurant and include one Michelin Star, which Smith and his 13 strong kitchen brigade acquired in less than a year.  Bohemia Bar & Restaurant was recently ranked as the highest scoring restaurant in the Channel Islands in the Good Food Guide 2016 with a glowing score of 7, its highest score yet. Bohemia was also named one of top 50 best restaurants in the UK in The Sunday Times. The Michelin star restaurant is also the only eatery in the Channel Islands to make it into the top 100, listed alongside The Ledbury, Le Gavroche, and The Fat Duck, firmly cementing both the restaurant’s and Jersey’s status as one of the world’s top foodie destinations.

Steve Smith’s most recent accolades also include Catey Chef of the Year, retaining Bohemia’s Michelin Star, being awarded 4AA Rosettes and special praise being given to Bohemia’s desserts which were listed ‘6th Best in the UK’ in The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants. In addition, OpenTable diners chose Bohemia as one of the top 20 most romantic restaurants and top 100 best restaurants in the UK.

Steve Smith, who previously headed the kitchens at The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms in Yorkshire, has devised four distinctive tasting menus combining seasonal, earthy ingredients with refined presentation. Exquisite dishes include: Foie Gras Cream with Rhubarb, topped with Duck Salad and Walnut; Turbot with Mussel, Cauliflower, Raisin, and Vadouvan; and Jersey Royal with Wild Garlic and Morel.

Steve Smith @ Bohemia endeavours to offer a variety of local, fresh produce in all of his dishes and celebrates seasonal fruits and vegetables. The majority of ingredients such as the famous Jersey Royal Potato and fresh Scallops are locally sourced from the island of Jersey, while other ingredients are gathered from France, a mere 16 miles away. The fresh Oysters come from local fishermen and from Normandy, the capital of Oyster farming.

The Tasting Menu, Pescatarian Tasting Menu and Vegetarian Tasting Menu cost £75 for 9 courses, while the Prestige Menu is priced at £85 for 11 courses (12 courses if guests add an additional cheese course). A Classic Menu is available Monday to Thursday for £49 for lunch and £59 for dinner, as well as a 6 course Surprise Evening Tasting Menu for £49.00. The restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday, Noon until 2.30pm for lunch, and 6.30pm until 11pm for dinner.

Following Steve’s unprecedented success in raising the culinary bar even higher for the restaurant, the owners of Bohemia felt compelled to revitalise the interior design to match.  In 2015 Bohemia unveiled a sophisticated and elegant new design, following a major refurbishment.

Bohemia’s pristine, dark granite frontage with grand double doors and four huge floor-to-ceiling windows exude contemporary style. Inside, grid-panelling features largely throughout and complements the leather wall-tiles to the rear of the restaurant. Dove-grey banquet seating forms a graceful profile along the back wall, while dark walnut panelled walls continue the beautifully refined design. Tables are set with crisp white linen cloths and napkins, with beautiful French J.L. Coquet service plates decorating the table for guests’ arrival.

Bohemia’s private dining area has been completely transformed and now oozes lavish style.  One wall has been clad in statement blue matt wallpaper, featuring an intricate gold design. A wall of panelled frosted glass to the front of the restaurant allows natural light to flood into the restaurant, whilst maintaining its discreet ambience.

The crowning feature of the private dining room is a statement chandelier made from 200 Champagne glasses. Each glass is individually illuminated with glowing effervescent ‘Champagne’ to give the illusion that it has just been poured.

The adjacent light and airy bar immediately envelopes each guest in comfort and style.  Contemporary patterned banquette sofas in burnt orange and rich blue hues run along the entire length of the room in front of the large feature windows.  In addition, buttoned oxblood-red leather chairs are neatly positioned to the opposite side of the inviting occasion tables.

The vibrant bar stocks a wide range of whisky and cognacs, and serves unique cocktails such as the Moulin Rouge Champagne Cocktail with fresh strawberries, and the popular Apple & Blackberry Pie.  One of Bohemia’s best selling drinks is the Lanique Rose Petal Liqueur.

Bohemia Bar serves relaxed fare, including a selection of light and contemporary dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Afternoon Tea, from £19.95 per person, is served in all areas of the hotel, with one of the most popular areas being the bar which is open 7 days a week.
