Right up our street – ‘cleaner to the stars’ adopts revolutionary technology

By James Russell: Right up our street – ‘cleaner to the stars’ adopts revolutionary technology

January 19, 2016

One of the best known launderers and dry cleaners in Manchester has adopted Xeros Bead Cleaning, a revolutionary British technology which will mean using less soap when cleaning celebrity soap stars’ costumes.

Granada Dry Cleaners in Bridge Street, Deansgate, has been in business for over 60 years, and specialises in cleaning theatrical costumes including those used by the stars of ITV soap Coronation Street – as well as costumers from the nearby Royal Exchange Theatre, the Opera House Manchester and other theatres across the city.

The Xeros Bead Cleaning system uses polymer bead technology to provide superior cleaning results when compared to conventional water-only washing machines. The beads are combined with a small amount of specialist detergent and water, and the dirt from the soiled items is then attracted and absorbed by the beads. This saves on water, energy and detergent.

Attiyah Mirza, who owns Granada Dry Cleaners heard about Xeros Bead Cleaning and decided to find out more. “When we heard about Xeros machines we decided to take a closer look and after seeing the results, and the savings we could make on energy, water and detergent, we had a machine installed”, explains Attiyah.

“In the five months we’ve been using the machine the results have been excellent, with theatrical costumes as well as general garments, and as a business the savings we’ll make will be very welcome.”

The reusable beads have a lifespan of hundreds of washes before being collected and recycled. The patented, award-winning system uses up to 80% less water, and approximately 50% less energy and detergent than traditional systems.
The Xeros Bead Cleaning technology is already well established in the US where it is increasingly used by hotels, gyms and commercial laundry operations.

Tony Kerr, European Sales Director for Xeros said: “As a result of the proven technology and dramatic improvement in wash quality, there is now a growing demand here in the UK from commercial laundries and the hospitality sector.
“The reduction in water, detergent and energy use is a real plus for businesses and of course for the environment, so this is a real ‘win/win’ technology.”

The highly-trained staff at Granada have over 30 years’ experience, and are all members of the Guild of Dry Cleaners. The company also has Premier League football stars among its customers – from both the Red and Blue halves of Manchester – and George Best and Prescilla Presley have been past celebrity customers.
