Death of the traditional Christmas Dinner?

By James Russell: Death of the traditional Christmas Dinner?

December 16, 2015

The traditional image of a turkey Christmas dinner with all the trimmings could become a thing of the past as research from restaurant booking platform Bookatable.co.uk has found that the meat is falling out of favour with Millennials. Over half of Brits aged 18-34 years old do not like the taste of turkey but force it down at Christmas. An additional third (37%) have had so many Christmas Dinners throughout December that they are fed up with the meal and would rather not eat one again when December 25 comes around.

Looking at Britain as a whole, over a third (34%) of Brits do not eat a ‘traditional’ Christmas Dinner and a further 7% admit they do not like the stereotypical seasonal meal. Almost a third (28%) of British diners are bored of turkey and would prefer to eat an alternative meat at Christmas.

Majority do not choose turkey

Amongst those that eat meat at Christmas, many are already looking further than turkey. 17 million Brits (27%) prefer to eat beef while 15 million (23%) celebrate the day with chicken. Duck and Lamb are popular alternatives with 8m Brits (13%) choosing each meat. These findings, combined with the growing ambivalence for the traditional Christmas Dinner amongst young Brits could spell trouble for turkey producers in the UK in years to come.
