Guernsey welcomes boutique hotel Ziggurat

By James Russell: Guernsey welcomes boutique hotel Ziggurat

November 19, 2015

Guernsey’s newest boutique property Ziggurat is now open, sitting in a privileged position overlooking the island’s capital of St Peter Port and offering unbeatable views over its historic harbour and out to sea. The Moroccan-inspired design hotel adds a fresh and fashionable choice to the island’s accommodation offering for the first time, as well as new nightlife options with its Middle Eastern restaurant and trendy cocktail lounge.

Aptly named after a stepped tower with a temple at the summit, Ziggurat is located halfway up Constitution Steps, perched on a hill above the cobbled streets of St Peter Port’s Old Quarter and lively seafront marina. The steps lead straight into the capital’s central Market Square, making it ideal for both holidaymakers and business travellers who are looking for a warm and intimate place to stay on the island.

The privately-run boutique hotel has 14 individually-designed ensuite bedrooms, which all feature plump fresh white bedding, a mini-fridge with chilled fresh Guernsey milk, handmade chocolates and local teas. Eleven of the rooms have a balcony or terrace with seating. The stylish hotel will help to attract a younger crowd to Guernsey and adds a sophisticated touch to a peaceful weekend away on the island.

At the heart of the property, the Moroccan-themed lounge and restaurant are open to the public and feature a large south-facing outdoor terrace and garden with views of Guernsey’s neighbouring bailiwick islands of Herm and Sark. Individual heated beach huts mean that guests can continue to admire the view from the terrace throughout the colder months while tucking into Middle Eastern inspired dishes, enjoying a drink from the bar’s specially-curated cocktail menu, or getting into the Arabian spirit with shisha.

On Ziggurat’s evening menu, authentic mezze dishes to share as a starter include ‘Briouats’ (spiced pastries filled with lamb, chicken or vegetables), ‘Taktouka’ (comprising roasted peppers and cooked tomatoes) and ‘Zaalouk’ (warm cauliflower and tomatoes with fresh herbs and chilli flakes). For main course, tagines made with either slow-cooked lamb or aromatic vegetables are served in traditional cooking pots with piles of Persian couscous, lentils and green salad flavoured with harissa. Sweet treats to finish the exotic feast include ‘elephant ear’ cookies with almond dip, Moroccan date cake, and sweet goat’s cheese with honey and savoury biscuits.

Rooms at Ziggurat are priced from £70 for a single room, including breakfast.
