apetito makes its mark with MSC accolade

By James Russell: apetito makes its mark with MSC accolade

November 10, 2015

apetito UK, the leading food producer for the health and social care sector, has achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody certification for its commitment to sustainable fish.

The new certification comes as it is confirmed 85% of the wild fish apetito UK source is now MSC certified sustainable and traceable. With the British Dietetic Association (BDA) guidelines stating that fish must be offered at least twice a week on a hospital menu and one of which should be an oily variety – in line with the healthy eating guidelines which also apply to care homes – this accolade demonstrates apetito’s commitment to providing quality and nutritious fish dishes to its customers.

The MSC is behind the most trusted, recognised and credible seafood ecolabel, which is awarded to producers, retailers and processors who meet their high benchmarks.  The MSC programme meets the best practice guidelines set by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) and the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labelling Alliance (ISEAL).

Supplying 3.2 million meals

Lee Sheppard, Director of Public Policy & External Affairs at apetito UK, voiced his support for this recent move:  “We are delighted to have taken this strong and decisive commitment to 100% demonstrably sustainable fish.  40 of our fish dishes now contain MSC certified sustainable fish – including 100% of all cod, plaice, pollock and hoki meals.”

George Clark, UK Commercial Manager at MSC, congratulated apetito UK on their great efforts in sourcing MSC sustainable fish within the care sector:  “apetito’s MSC certification is a fantastic achievement and supplying an incredible 3.2m meals means that there is now access to MSC dishes where previously it has not existed on this scale.  The business has made a great commitment and are certainly leading the way in this sector.  We know apetito’s new certification will inspire others in the health and social care sector to discover the great range and availability of MSC sustainable fish and support the mission of maintaining good fish stocks in healthy oceans.”
