Leisure manager for English Lakes Hotels

By James Russell: Leisure manager for English Lakes Hotels

October 20, 2015

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues has re-enlisted one of its former general managers, Michael Kay, to take forward its leisure strategy and widen the range of recreational choices on offer for guests across its five venues in Cumbria and North Lancashire.

Mr Kay first worked for the group as part of his HND placement, before securing a permanent role in 1993 and working his way up the career ladder to become general manager responsible for Waterhead Hotel and Low Wood Leisure Club.

In 2003, he took the opportunity to pursue a new role in multi-site management and brand development, including taking care of a luxury estate, multiple leisure spas and a prominent self-catering business in the Lake District.  More recently he has been involved in the development of a successful travel company offering worldwide guided holidays primarily to the American market.

“It’s a pleasure to re-join the team at English Lakes and to be placed at the helm of the current and future development of the group’s leisure activities,” says Michael. “It’s an exciting time, not only as we move through a new phase for Low Wood Bay, but also as we continue to consider and develop exciting opportunities across the whole portfolio of our venues.

“Meeting up with new and familiar faces here, it’s clear that this is still a family orientated company which is also moving with the times.  I am keen to make a positive contribution.”

Having been educated overseas in Spain, Australia, Singapore and the USA, Michael returned to the UK at 21 to begin his hospitality career having completed associate degrees in foreign languages and computer science.  He is a married father of two.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues managing director Simon Berry says:  “We are really pleased to see Michael returning to the group and look forward to him playing a key role in developing our leisure offering.

“Michael is now a seasoned operator accustomed to making strong contributions at all levels of an organisation like ours.  The experience he has gained over the last 12 years in the continued growth and development of prominent UK self-catering brands will be highly valued.”
