Celebrity chef John Burton Race has been appointed Chef-in-Residence at the Otterburn Castle Hotel in Northumberland.

The 58-year-old chef will take over as Head Chef at the Grade II listed hotel’s Oak Room Restaurant this month introducing a new seasonal a la carte menu as well as daily specials.

Burton Race, who has worked with some of the world’s top chefs in a career spanning over 30 years, said:

“I have visited Otterburn many times as a guest and fallen in love with the castle, the people and the spectacular region. I’ve always believed the best food you can eat is fresh and from on your own doorstep, so where better to bring that to the plate than Otterburn Castle.”

John Burton Race began his career working for renowned chef Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Buckinghamshire. He went on to work at some of the country’s top restaurants including Quaglino’s, Hotel Meurice London and La Sorbonne before winning his first Michelin star at Raymond Blanc’s Le Petit Blanc in Oxford in 1996.

Burton Race opened his own restaurant L’Ortolan in Berkshire, winning two Michelin stars. He repeated the success at his second venue, John Burton-Race Restaurant at the Landmark Hotel in 2000.

Away from the kitchen John Burton Race has carved out a successful media career appearing in BBC series The Great British Menu, Master Chef and ITV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

Michelin quality dining for Otterburn

A spokesman for Otterburn Castle said:

“We’re delighted to have a chef as experienced, talented and unique as John Burton Race bringing Michelin star quality dining to Otterburn.”

The award-winning Oak Room restaurant is set within the luxurious Otterburn Castle Hotel, which was first built in 1086 by a cousin of William the Conqueror and is nestled in 32 acres of tranquil gardens and woodland.

The restaurant offers fine dining based on the freshest seasonal produce and regionally sourced ingredients including locally caught game, meat and fish as well as vegetables from the Otterburn Castle garden.

Otterburn village is located half a mile from the site of the historic Battle of Otterburn, where the English army were defeated by the Scots in 1388 and within Northumberland National Park, which covers over 400 square miles of countryside.
