Brits may love their fish and chips, bangers and mash and roast dinners but there’s no denying that the burger has become one of the nation’s favourite foods, with new OpenTable research revealing that Britons are consuming an impressive 1,668 burgers over a lifetime.
Perfect burger is…the classic cheeseburger
With Friday 18th September marking National Cheeseburger Day, OpenTable, the leading restaurant booking website, is today revealing the results of a nationwide survey exposing that the UK’s all time perfect burger is the classic cheeseburger.
The chosen elements that make up this perfect burger consist of a well done, 2.5 cm thick Angus steak burger, topped with cheddar cheese and ketchup, inside a white sesame seed bun.
With the UK’s love of cheese rivalling that of the French, Brits are now consuming a staggering 700,000 tonnes of the dairy product every year. It is no surprise then thatcheddar cheese won the UK’s vote of favourite burger topping, with 58% of Brits choosing this as their first choice, Monetary Jack (17%) stilton (13%) and blue cheese (10%) also proved to be popular cheesy choices.
Men eat more burgers than women
The research went on to reveal that men are eating more burgers than women, with British men admitting to buying 2.25 burgers a month, compared to just 1.7 burgers a month for women. Looking closer at the different cities in the UK, it turns out that the people of Liverpool enjoy burgers the most, with Liverpudlians eating, on average, 2.4 burgers a month. The folk of Aberystwyth enjoy burgers the least with residents consuming just 1.1 burgers a month.
While the traditional cheeseburger is the UK’s number one choice, the study also looked at Britons favourite alternative burger, which turned out to be the venison burger, with 34% choosing this meat, over more exotic choices like ostrich, kangaroo and even zebra.
