Well, the ones that have survived!
We seriously think that, there is no nicer desert than the ones with sour cherry fruit inside! However, there ain’t any sour cherries available to buy from the grocers – if you know of any – please please let us know..?
Anyway, for that reason, we have planted one juicy Morello cherry right in front of our Granny’s Secret Office, South West facing – all rules followed, so that some day soon we would be able to make that special desert! Really? Yes, really – that is how desperate we he grown to be – away from our roots, still living happy lives here, but the cherries we have been craving for ever since.
Anyway, few years on, our cherry tree has been full of blossoms this March, quite a hand full of cherries as fruit spread around the crown by June until – the birds have discovered them ! Shock and horror for our planned dessert! We have even travelled back home (to the Balkans) to bring that special hand made thin filo pastry! Not to despair, we have put the mesh all around it – now sitting and watching,until – there was a whole of a large pigeon inside that mesh! Flapping with the wings and scared.
Okay, we put the mesh above and all around and secure it tightly – with no gaps. Now what..? Well, at around 11 am there come the baby black birds poking the cherries through the mesh and flapping their wings from outside the mesh – still with a cherry in their beak! Enough is enough, now there come the huge barricade – a parasol on the floor – to obscure their vision from ‘above’ and the big black cat who found that very interesting as they couldn’t see her but she could see them!
Okay, you may think this is getting silly well we just needed those few extra days for the Morello cherries to harvest and then – the mesh went down. (Friends did ask in tease ‘ have you cooked your bird stew yet..?’ Nah – that would be awful. The cherries were gorgeous – made us very proud. They went straight into a pie – the most delicious succulent sweet & sour dessert , sprinkled with icing sugar – that you can find anywhere!
But, it needn’t be that difficult, we have brought delicious preserves with the whole sour cherries in them – that you could use in your baking and pie making, it is called : Whole Sour Cherry Fruit Preserve, in fact it has won the Double Gold Great Taste Award in 2013.
Also the Sour Cherry extra jam – which is now selling at Selfridges&Co.
Also, the Sour cherry fantastic juices – 65 succulent sour cherries squeezed in one little bottle of juice! Yummy, selling at few large garden centres around the country – people say that they are good for the joints (or whatever hey meant)
