Raise your glass – to London restaurants and their wine lists

By James Russell: Raise your glass – to London restaurants and their wine lists

June 4, 2015

London restaurants have some of the best wine lists in the world, according to the magazine The World of Fine Wine in their annual “World’s Best Wine Lists” awards.

The publication gave 38 restaurants from London a one, two or the prestigious three-star rating for the quality of their wine list, ranking London behind only New York (68) and Sydney (46).

Overall, 26 restaurants from London were given the top honour of a three-star rating, second only to New York. In total there were only 300 three-star lists, 254 two-star lists and 342 one-star lists given out globally.

The overall winner of the “World’s Best Wine List” was New York-based Eleven Madison Park, which replaced Austrian restaurant Palais Coburg Residenz in Austria, which won the award in 2014.

The wine awards are judged by a panel containing some of the leading wine critics and masters of wine from around the globe including: Alder Yarrow, Elin McCoy,  Ch’ng Poh Tiong, Andrew Jefford, Andreas Larsson, Francis Percival and Tom Stevenson. The judges assessed well over 4,000 wine lists from restaurants from around the world before coming up with the final 896 one, two and three-star restaurants.

A one-star rating is given to a “good wine list”, a two-star rating to a “very good wine list” and a three-star rating to a “great wine list”. This grading is based on the breadth, depth, interest, quality, value, organization and accuracy of the list.

Raphael Rodriguez, Restaurant Manager of three-star winner Fera, commented: “It feels great to be recognised by experienced professionals who travelled the world and dined in the best restaurants. It gives us a thrill, acknowledges our hard work and encourages us to push further.”

Other London based three-star winners include: Dabbous, Dinner by Heston, Hakkasan, Pollen Street Social, Wild Honey and The Ledbury.
