Want to dish out Britain’s ultimate burger this summer? Red Tractor, the UK’s leading quality assurance scheme, asked consumers to vote for their favourite burger and uncovered some interesting results.
As part of a seven week promotional campaign focusing on Red Tractor barbecue products, Red Tractor Assurance (RTA) asked consumers to build their perfect burger for a chance to win tickets to a summer VIP barbecue party hosted by Red Tractor ambassador Alex James.
Beef came out top
The nation’s top five burger fillings are:
- Beef 27%
- Grilled chicken 17%
- Pulled pork 16%
- Mushroom 11%
- Lamb 7%
Over 7,000 Brits declared what they deem to be the best burger using a ‘Build a Burger’ app on the website. Unsurprisingly beef came out as the nation’s top choice when it comes to choosing a favourite filling, but the results also revealed some interesting findings:
- Grilled chicken is seven times more popular than fried chicken
- Pulled pork continues its persistent rise in popularity taking 16% of the vote and coming third in the list of favourite between-the-bun fillings
- Brits are still traditionalists when it comes to burgers, with lettuce (15%), tomato (12%) and red onion (11%) forming the key salad ingredients in the nation’s ultimate burger, representing 38% of the overall vote
- Cheddar takes the top spot as the nation’s cheese of choice with 44% of the vote, followed by halloumi (27%), stilton (16%) and Red Leicester (13%)
- Garlic mayonnaise is officially the condiment of choice taking over 11% of the votes, closely followed by mayonnaise (10%), barbecue sauce (9%) and burger relish (8%)
- Despite numerous options for herbivores, mushrooms are still the top pick for veggie fans
- Brioche is close to toppling seeded as the number one bun; 25% of the nation favour brioche, with seeded polling 26% of the vote
Quality of ingredients
Red Tractor Assurance marketing manager, Andy Thompson, said: “As pubs and restaurants strive to offer the best burger combinations this barbecue season, it’s interesting to see from our ‘Build A Burger’ app what really tickles the nation’s taste buds.
“What is important, however, is to consider the quality of ingredients in order to provide diners with confidence in the food they are eating, particularly when it comes to meat and poultry. The Red Tractor Assurance scheme is one of the best means of showing that the food you serve originates from a trusted source.
“As well as meat, the Red Tractor logo can also be found on pre-packed vegetables, chilled salads, bread and cheeses, so caterers can truly deliver the ultimate quality assured burger!”
The Red Tractor logo is already used by around 5,500 foodservice outlets, covering numerous branded restaurant and pub chains and quick service restaurants, many schools, all major contract caterers, and all major national and regional wholesalers.
